The incident required the evacuation of over 100 people (including patients) from smoke affected areas of the building. The evacuation was carried out by Fire service personnel with the assistance of medical staff, Leicestershire Police and onsite security staff.
At 18:36, confirmation was received that the fire was extinguished, Fire Crews continuing to damp down and clear smoke from the affected areas of the hospital.
The extent of the damage has not yet been confirmed however, it has been confirmed that the spread of fire has been limited to the room of origin, and as a result operations are now in progress to reopen the affected wards. Access to the Balmoral Building was restricted for a period of time during this incident however, this has now reopened and full access is now available.
The incident has now been reduced to 4 fire appliances, these 4 appliances remain on scene making up equipment and assisting Hospital staff with the clear up to allow full hospital operations to resume ASAP.

Fire service operations have now been completed, Fire investigation has been completed. Cause of fire is believed to be an overheated refrigerator. incident has been left with responsible site personnel.
