The Equality Act 2010 protects employees who are in a civil partnership or marriage, including same sex marriage, against discrimination.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service promotes equality for every employee and will continuously review its policies and practice to ensure they reflect its ambitions, legal obligations and the needs of the workforce.

At Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service, same-sex couples who register and inform the Service of their civil partnership have the right to equal treatment with married couples, in a wide range of matters including employment and vocational training. Whatever benefits are provided to married employees (including same sex marriage) and their spouses, the same are also provided to employees who are in civil partnerships and to their civil partners. This includes:

  • Survivor pensions
  • Flexible working
  • Statutory paternity pay
  • Paternity and adoption leave
  • Time off before or after having/adopting children.
  • Recruitment and selection policies do not discriminate on the grounds of civil partnerships or marriage (including same sex marriage)

The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013

This act enables same sex couples to marry in England and Wales, either in a civil ceremony (i.e. a civil ceremony in a register office or approved premises e.g. a hotel) or, provided that the religious organisation concerned is in agreement, on religious premises, with the marriage being solemnised through a religious ceremony.
